How Engineering Assumptions Kill Solar Schedules

    By Chad Buccine, P.E. — May 04, 2026 · 5 min read

In commercial solar engineering, the most dangerous phrase is 'we'll assume that for now.' Assumptions are the silent killers of project schedules. Every time an engineer makes an assumption about site conditions, utility capacity, or AHJ requirements, they are creating a technical debt that must be paid during construction. At Jolt, we've built our reputation on replacing assumptions with data.

The Cost of 'Assuming' Site Conditions

Satellite imagery is great for preliminary layouts, but it's not a substitute for a site visit. Assuming a roof's structural capacity or the condition of an electrical panel is a recipe for a project-stopping RFI. When the field crew discovers that the panel can't support the interconnection or the roof needs reinforcement, the schedule is already dead. Rigorous upfront data gathering is the only way to prevent these 'discovered' delays.

    Utility Assumptions and Interconnection Stalls

Assuming that a utility will 'likely approve' a specific interconnection strategy is a high-stakes gamble. Utilities have very specific, and often changing, hosting capacity and equipment requirements. If you design based on an assumption and the utility rejects it, you are looking at a full redesign and a reset of the interconnection queue. We verify utility requirements before the first line is drawn.

    AHJ Assumptions and Permitting Cycles

Local code amendments can vary significantly from one jurisdiction to the next. Assuming that 'standard' NEC compliance is enough will lead to permit rejections in AHJs with specific fire safety or structural requirements. We track local amendments across 20+ states to ensure our plan sets clear review on the first submission.

    The Jolt Zero-Assumption Policy

We treat every project as unique. We front-load the technical rigor, validating all critical site and utility data before we finalize the design. This 'zero-assumption' approach is why our clients experience fewer RFIs, faster permit approvals, and more predictable schedules.

Stop letting assumptions kill your pipeline. Let's talk about data-driven engineering.
