
First-Time Solar Inspection Success Guide
Passing a commercial solar inspection on the first try isn't about luck—it's about preparation and alignment between the engineering drawings and the physical installation. For EPCs, a failed inspection means a second site visit, delayed PTO, and frustrated clients. Here is the Jolt guide to ensuring your next project clears the AHJ inspection without a hitch.
1. Match the Plan Set to the Build
The number one reason for inspection failure is a discrepancy between the approved plan set and what was actually installed. If you had to swap an inverter or change a conduit run due to site conditions, those changes must be documented and approved via a revision before the inspector arrives. Don't expect an inspector to 'be reasonable' about deviations from the stamped drawings.
2. Labeling is Non-Negotiable
Inspectors look for clear, durable, and code-compliant labeling first. NEC Article 690 and 705 have very specific requirements for warning signs, disconnect labels, and directory maps. If your labels are missing, incorrect, or made of non-durable material, the inspection is over before it starts.
3. Torque Documentation
Modern codes require specific torque values for electrical connections. Many AHJs now require proof that connections were torqued to manufacturer specifications. Keeping a torque log and having a calibrated torque wrench on-site during the inspection shows the inspector that you are serious about quality and safety.
4. Grounding and Bonding
Grounding is the foundation of electrical safety, and it's a high-priority item for every inspector. Ensure all equipment is properly bonded, the GEC is correctly sized and protected, and that your grounding electrodes meet local requirements. A loose lug or an unbonded rail is an automatic fail.
