Navigating Solar Project Delays: Solutions for Timely Completion

    By Chad Buccine, P.E. — May 12, 2026 · 6 min read

In the commercial solar industry, a project that stays perfectly on schedule is a rarity. Between utility interconnection queues, AHJ permit backlogs, and supply chain volatility, the potential for delay is everywhere. However, most project delays are not inevitable—they are the result of poor planning or inadequate technical foresight. Navigating these delays requires a proactive approach and a deep understanding of the project's critical path.

    Anticipating Utility Bottlenecks

The utility interconnection review is the single most common cause of solar project delays. Navigating this requires more than just submitting a form and waiting. It requires submitting a high-quality, code-compliant application that leaves no room for questions or rejections. It also requires active follow-up and technical advocacy. A strong engineering partner can often resolve technical hurdles with the utility before they turn into multi-week delays.

    Streamlining AHJ Permitting

Local building departments are often understaffed and overwhelmed. To navigate this, your plan sets must be bulletproof. This means researching local code amendments and jurisdiction-specific requirements before the first line is drawn. A plan set that clears permit review on the first submission is the fastest way to keep your project moving. If a rejection does happen, the response must be immediate and comprehensive.

    Mitigating Supply Chain Surprises

Supply chain volatility is the new normal. Navigating this requires flexibility in the design phase. If a specified component suddenly has a 50-week lead time, your engineering team must be able to quickly evaluate and specify an equivalent alternative without requiring a full redesign. Early coordination between engineering and procurement is the key to preventing material-driven delays.
