What Developers Really Want from Their Engineering Partners

    By Chad Buccine, P.E. — February 10, 2026 · 6 min read

Having spent a decade on the EPC side before founding Jolt, I've been the client. I know what it feels like to wait on an engineering firm while a project schedule slips. I know the frustration of receiving a plan set that looks beautiful but is impossible to build.

Developers aren't looking for just drawings; they're looking for a partner who understands their business model. Here's what they actually want.

    1. Predictability over Raw Speed

Yes, speed matters. But predictability matters more. A firm that promises a 48-hour turnaround but requires three rounds of AHJ revisions is slower than a firm that takes five days and gets it right the first time. Developers want a schedule they can bank on, because their financing and construction teams depend on it.

    2. Proactive Problem Solving

The worst time to find out about a structural constraint or a utility interconnection hurdle is after the permit is submitted. Developers want engineers who identify these risks during the kickoff phase and present solutions, not just problems.

    3. Direct Access to the Engineer

When an electrician is on a hot roof and needs an RFI answered to keep the crew moving, they can't wait 48 hours for a project manager to relay the question to an offshore drafting team. Developers want direct, immediate access to the licensed engineer who stamped the plans.

    4. Transparent Pricing

The "low upfront cost, high revision fee" model is broken. Developers want to know their true engineering costs upfront. That's why Jolt includes AHJ and utility revisions in our standard pricing—we align our incentives with yours: getting it approved.

    The Jolt Approach

I built Jolt to be the engineering firm I wished I had when I was on the EPC side. We optimize for certainty, clear communication, and constructability, because that's what actually drives project success.
